About this episode
🎧 This What’s the Reason for This Session drops listeners straight into the dungeon with Tonewood String Band for an intimate, emotionally rich set that highlights the depth, range, and heart behind their debut album Heart of the Pretender. 🪕✨🔥 From hushed harmonies 🎤🌙 to soaring choruses 🌄🎶, this session captures the band at their most honest, vulnerable, and locked-in. ❤️🔥🎧
The session opens with “Only the Moon,” a tender, atmospheric tune the band acquired from songwriter Robert Davis after a late-night jam at Midwinter Bluegrass Festival. 🌙🤝 The song stuck with them long after first hearing it — the ultimate sign of a great tune — and the performance reflects that reverence with soft dynamics, shimmering harmonies, and a slow-burn emotional pull. ✨🎶💫
Next up is “Faith,” an original written by Evan and one of the singles released ahead of the album. ❤️📝 Introduced with raw honesty, the song explores the ache of not being fully seen or believed in by someone you love 😔💔 — and the decision to turn that hurt into something meaningful. The band leans all the way in here, letting space, harmony, and restraint carry the weight. 🎤🪕🌾
The vibe shifts with a surprise cover of “Animal” by Miike Snow, flipped into a driving bluegrass arrangement that somehow feels both unexpected and completely natural. 🐾🔥🎸 The band stretches out just enough, flexing their genre-bending muscles while keeping the groove tight and playful. It’s a reminder that Tonewood isn’t afraid to color outside the lines. 🎨⚡😏
The session closes with the album’s title track, “Heart of the Pretender.” ♠️💛 Written during a period of post-pandemic reflection and heartbreak, the song anchors the entire set with themes of surrender, resilience, and choosing how to move forward when the cards are down. 🎴💭 The final chorus lands heavy — reflective, hopeful, and deeply human. 🫶🎶✨
This session is a snapshot of Tonewood String Band at a pivotal moment — confident, introspective, and fully committed to the songs. 🎧🌾💥 It’s stripped-down, heartfelt, and the perfect entry point into the world of Heart of the Pretender.
